Overview

About Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft Copilot is the consumer assistant that signs in with a Microsoft account and runs in the browser, in Windows and Mac desktop apps, in iOS and Android apps and inside Edge. It answers questions with web-grounded search, drafts and rewrites text, generates images, reads uploaded files and photos, and carries one conversation across devices; the same brand name also fronts the Microsoft 365 Copilot that works inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook on a paid subscription. The assistant itself is free with usage limits that depend on capacity, and higher limits, the Office-app integration and newer models come with a Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium or Pro plan rather than a separate Copilot Pro, which Microsoft has stopped selling.

Editorial verdict

Pros & cons of Microsoft Copilot

medium confidence

Copilot is the sensible default for people who live in Windows, Edge and Microsoft 365: it is already installed, it is free for ordinary use, and paying a Microsoft 365 subscription you may already have unlocks it inside Word and Excel. Judged purely as a chatbot it trails ChatGPT and Gemini on depth and features, so power users who are not tied to Office should pick on model quality, not on the taskbar button.

Pros

  • Free tier with web-grounded answers, image generation, file and photo understanding
  • Native apps on Windows, Mac, iOS and Android plus Edge, with one account carrying the conversation across them
  • Upgrade path reuses Microsoft 365 plans most households already pay for, from $9.99 a month
  • Clear consumer privacy and health-data policies published alongside the terms

Cons

  • Free usage is explicitly capacity-dependent, so limits move without notice
  • The Copilot name covers several different products, and the consumer one is the least capable
  • Family plan grants the AI features to the subscription owner only, not to the other five members
  • Copilot Pro was retired and folded into Microsoft 365 Premium, so older guides and price quotes are stale

Best for

  • Windows and Edge users who want an assistant that is already there and costs nothing for everyday questions
  • Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscribers who want AI drafting inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Households and students who need grounded web answers and image creation without another subscription

Not for

  • Developers — the consumer assistant has no API; Microsoft sells models through Azure instead
  • People who want the strongest reasoning models or the richest project tooling, where ChatGPT and Gemini lead

Watch out: Do not look for Copilot Pro — Microsoft stopped selling it; the $19.99 Microsoft 365 Premium plan is the replacement, and the cheaper Personal plan already includes Copilot in the Office apps.
