What our research says

Meta AI

Meta AI is the assistant you already have if you use WhatsApp or Instagram, and that distribution — not model quality — is its argument: it sits in the chat list, the search bar and the camera, with no sign-up and no bill for ordinary questions. People who want the strongest reasoning, a developer API or a workspace of saved projects should look at ChatGPT or Gemini; this is for quick answers, images and voice inside apps you already open.

Pros

  • Free for everyday use with no account beyond the Meta app you already have
  • Lives in WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Facebook, a standalone app, the web, a Mac beta and the glasses
  • Voice mode in 13 languages, file and photo upload, image and video generation and a reasoning mode in one place
  • Incognito chats and the ability to connect email, calendar and business accounts

Cons

  • Meta has started capping media generation and selling the headroom back as a subscription, with no published numbers for the limits
  • Cannot be removed from the apps it is embedded in, which many users find intrusive
  • The underlying model changed from Llama to the Muse family with little published detail on capability or data use
  • Feature availability differs by country and account, so screenshots and tutorials often do not match what you see

Microsoft Copilot

Copilot is the sensible default for people who live in Windows, Edge and Microsoft 365: it is already installed, it is free for ordinary use, and paying a Microsoft 365 subscription you may already have unlocks it inside Word and Excel. Judged purely as a chatbot it trails ChatGPT and Gemini on depth and features, so power users who are not tied to Office should pick on model quality, not on the taskbar button.

Pros

  • Free tier with web-grounded answers, image generation, file and photo understanding
  • Native apps on Windows, Mac, iOS and Android plus Edge, with one account carrying the conversation across them
  • Upgrade path reuses Microsoft 365 plans most households already pay for, from $9.99 a month
  • Clear consumer privacy and health-data policies published alongside the terms

Cons

  • Free usage is explicitly capacity-dependent, so limits move without notice
  • The Copilot name covers several different products, and the consumer one is the least capable
  • Family plan grants the AI features to the subscription owner only, not to the other five members
  • Copilot Pro was retired and folded into Microsoft 365 Premium, so older guides and price quotes are stale

Which one fits

Choose Meta AI if you need

  • WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger users who want answers, images and summaries without leaving the chat
  • Owners of Meta's AI glasses, where it is the only assistant on offer
  • Casual image and short-video generation with a free allowance

Choose Microsoft Copilot if you need

  • Windows and Edge users who want an assistant that is already there and costs nothing for everyday questions
  • Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscribers who want AI drafting inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Households and students who need grounded web answers and image creation without another subscription
