What our research says

Gemini

Gemini earns its place by being the assistant that is already inside the Google products most people use: free Deep Research, image generation and a voice mode cost nothing, and the $19.99 Pro plan is where it becomes a work tool, with the top models, Gmail and Docs integration and 5 TB of storage on the same bill. Pick it if your life runs on Google; pick ChatGPT or Claude if you want the assistant separate from your email and documents, or care about a specific model family for a specific job.

Pros

  • Free tier includes Deep Research, image generation and editing, Gemini Live and Gems rather than a crippled chat
  • Paid plans bundle storage, Flow video credits, Notebook and YouTube perks, so the AI spend doubles as a Google One upgrade
  • Multimodal from the start: images, audio, video and files as input on web and mobile
  • The same models are available to developers per token on the Gemini API with a free Google AI Studio

Cons

  • Plan tiers are defined by usage multipliers (2x, 4x, 5x, 20x) with no absolute numbers, so limits are hard to compare
  • The useful work integration (Gmail, Docs) starts at $19.99, not on the $4.99 plan for Docs
  • Prices and perks vary by country and the plans page localises silently, so quoted figures may not match what you see
  • Model names and tiers change often (Argon, Pro, Flash, Flash-Lite), which makes it unclear what the free tier is actually running

Microsoft Copilot

Copilot is the sensible default for people who live in Windows, Edge and Microsoft 365: it is already installed, it is free for ordinary use, and paying a Microsoft 365 subscription you may already have unlocks it inside Word and Excel. Judged purely as a chatbot it trails ChatGPT and Gemini on depth and features, so power users who are not tied to Office should pick on model quality, not on the taskbar button.

Pros

  • Free tier with web-grounded answers, image generation, file and photo understanding
  • Native apps on Windows, Mac, iOS and Android plus Edge, with one account carrying the conversation across them
  • Upgrade path reuses Microsoft 365 plans most households already pay for, from $9.99 a month
  • Clear consumer privacy and health-data policies published alongside the terms

Cons

  • Free usage is explicitly capacity-dependent, so limits move without notice
  • The Copilot name covers several different products, and the consumer one is the least capable
  • Family plan grants the AI features to the subscription owner only, not to the other five members
  • Copilot Pro was retired and folded into Microsoft 365 Premium, so older guides and price quotes are stale

Which one fits

Choose Gemini if you need

  • People whose email, files and calendar already live in Google and want the assistant inside them
  • Research-heavy users, since Deep Research and a large context window are on every tier
  • Households and students, with family sharing and a yearly student offer on the paid plans

Choose Microsoft Copilot if you need

  • Windows and Edge users who want an assistant that is already there and costs nothing for everyday questions
  • Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscribers who want AI drafting inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Households and students who need grounded web answers and image creation without another subscription
