The assistant itself is free; Meta is testing usage caps on image and video generation, and when a cap is hit the app offers a Meta One subscription billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play — Core at $7.99 a month (bundles Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook Plus with more generation) and Premium at $19.99 a month with the largest AI allowance. No numeric limits are published, and plans, prices and availability vary by region and account.
Use tool ↗About Meta AI
Meta AI is the assistant Meta ships inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and Facebook, as a standalone iOS and Android app, on the web, in a Mac beta and on Meta's AI glasses. It answers in an instant mode or a slower reasoning mode, runs a conversational voice mode in 13 languages, creates and edits images, generates video, reads uploaded files and photos, and can be pointed at email, calendar and business accounts; Meta now says it is powered by its Muse Spark models rather than naming Llama. Everyday use is free, but Meta is testing daily and monthly limits on the media features, and the Meta One Core and Premium subscriptions sold through the app stores buy more generation headroom rather than a different product. It launched in beta in September 2023 in the US and is now available in most regions.

Pros & cons of Meta AI
Meta AI is the assistant you already have if you use WhatsApp or Instagram, and that distribution — not model quality — is its argument: it sits in the chat list, the search bar and the camera, with no sign-up and no bill for ordinary questions. People who want the strongest reasoning, a developer API or a workspace of saved projects should look at ChatGPT or Gemini; this is for quick answers, images and voice inside apps you already open.
Pros
- Free for everyday use with no account beyond the Meta app you already have
- Lives in WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Facebook, a standalone app, the web, a Mac beta and the glasses
- Voice mode in 13 languages, file and photo upload, image and video generation and a reasoning mode in one place
- Incognito chats and the ability to connect email, calendar and business accounts
Cons
- Meta has started capping media generation and selling the headroom back as a subscription, with no published numbers for the limits
- Cannot be removed from the apps it is embedded in, which many users find intrusive
- The underlying model changed from Llama to the Muse family with little published detail on capability or data use
- Feature availability differs by country and account, so screenshots and tutorials often do not match what you see
Best for
- WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger users who want answers, images and summaries without leaving the chat
- Owners of Meta's AI glasses, where it is the only assistant on offer
- Casual image and short-video generation with a free allowance
Not for
- Developers — there is no public API for the consumer assistant, and Meta's models are sold separately through other channels
- Anyone who needs their prompts kept out of an advertising company's data estate
Watch out: The free tier is the product, but once you hit a generation cap the only way past it is a Meta One subscription through the app store, and the limit itself is not published — budget for $7.99 a month if you lean on image or video generation.
