Free gives 2,000 inline suggestions a month and limited chat and agent use. Pro is $10/month with $15 of monthly GitHub AI Credits ($10 base plus a $5 flex allotment that may change), Pro+ $39 with $70, Max $100 with $200; completions stay unlimited on paid tiers, chat, agents and CLI spend credits at $0.01 each, and extra usage runs against a dollar budget you set. Business and Enterprise add license and policy management and IP indemnity.

About GitHub Copilot

GitHub Copilot completes code as you type, answers questions about a repository in chat, and runs agents that can carry an issue through to a pull request and review the diff. It installs into VS Code, Visual Studio, Xcode, Neovim and the JetBrains IDEs. The paid tiers have shifted from a flat seat fee to a monthly pool of AI credits, so agent and chat work now draws down a balance that completions do not.

Still the least disruptive way to put an assistant in front of a whole engineering org, but the credit meter means the $10 tier is no longer a flat-rate promise once anyone starts using agents seriously.

Pros

Broadest IDE coverage of any assistant: VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Neovim, Xcode
Free tier is real and needs no card, which makes org-wide trials trivial
Unlimited completions on every paid tier, so the meter only touches the expensive work

Cons

Four individual tiers from $10 to $100 make it hard to predict what a team actually costs
Credits are consumed by premium models at very different rates, so budgeting is guesswork
IP indemnity is Business-and-up only, which is often the deciding factor for enterprises

Best for

Teams standardising on one assistant across mixed IDEs and languages
Organisations that need IP indemnity and admin policy control
Developers who mostly want completions and occasional chat

Not for

Heavy agent users on Pro, who will burn $15 of credits well before month end
Anyone wanting a general-purpose inference API — this is an editor product

Watch out: Pro's $15 monthly credit allowance is the real limit, not the $10 price. Sustained agent work is what Max at $100/month exists for, and the jump between them is steep.
