Use tool ↗About TLDR Dev
TLDR is a plugin for JetBrains IDEs that takes whatever code you have selected and returns a plain-English explanation of it, including regular expressions and SQL queries. It covers effectively any language the IDE handles. There is a rate-limited free tier, then $4.90 a month or $49 a year per user for individuals, and $9.90 a month or $99 a year per user for organisations. The vendor is Beyond Code GmbH of Kerken, Germany, run by Marcel Pociot and Sebastian Schlein, a shop better known in the PHP tooling world. Selected code is sent to the vendor's servers for processing, which is the main thing to weigh before installing it on a work machine. Other IDEs are described as in progress.

Pros & cons of TLDR Dev
Narrow on purpose and priced accordingly - under five dollars a month for a plugin that does one thing, explaining a selection, without trying to be a full coding agent. Regex and SQL explanation alone earns it a slot for people who read more unfamiliar code than they write. Two caveats matter: it is JetBrains-only, and your selected code leaves the machine.
Pros
- Works on effectively any language the IDE supports, plus regex and SQL
- Free rate-limited tier lets you judge quality before paying
- $4.90/month individual pricing is far below full coding-assistant seats
- Published by a named German company with a VAT ID and identified directors
Cons
- JetBrains IDEs only; other editors are still unreleased
- Selected code is transmitted to the vendor's servers for processing
- Explanation only - it does not generate, refactor, or fix code
- Free tier is rate-limited with no published quota
Best for
- Developers reading unfamiliar or inherited code in a JetBrains IDE
- Untangling a dense regular expression or a long SQL query
- Teams that want an explanation tool without a per-seat agent subscription
Not for
- VS Code, Neovim, or Visual Studio users - JetBrains only today
- Codebases under confidentiality rules that forbid sending source off-machine
Watch out: The vendor states outright that selected code is sent to its servers - check that against your employer's source-code policy first.
