What our research says

GitHub Copilot

Still the least disruptive way to put an assistant in front of a whole engineering org, but the credit meter means the $10 tier is no longer a flat-rate promise once anyone starts using agents seriously.

Pros

  • Broadest IDE coverage of any assistant: VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Neovim, Xcode
  • Free tier is real and needs no card, which makes org-wide trials trivial
  • Unlimited completions on every paid tier, so the meter only touches the expensive work

Cons

  • Four individual tiers from $10 to $100 make it hard to predict what a team actually costs
  • Credits are consumed by premium models at very different rates, so budgeting is guesswork
  • IP indemnity is Business-and-up only, which is often the deciding factor for enterprises

Refact.ai

One of the few coding agents you can audit and run entirely on your own hardware, at a Pro price well under most rivals. The trade-off is polish: agent and completion quality trail the frontier hosted tools, and the docs subdomain currently redirects somewhere stale.

Pros

  • Open-source core with a real self-hosted path, including fine-tuning
  • Broad IDE coverage beyond the usual VS Code-only support
  • Pro at $10/month undercuts most agent subscriptions
  • Free tier suffices for light daily use

Cons

  • docs.refact.ai currently redirects to an outdated third-party GitHub wiki
  • Output quality depends heavily on which model tier you run
  • Small vendor competing against far larger, faster-moving rivals

Choose GitHub Copilot if you need

  • Teams standardising on one assistant across mixed IDEs and languages
  • Organisations that need IP indemnity and admin policy control
  • Developers who mostly want completions and occasional chat

Choose Refact.ai if you need

  • Teams whose code must stay on-prem but still want an agent and completions
  • Developers who want AI inside JetBrains, VS Code or Neovim rather than a separate AI editor
  • Tinkerers who prefer open-source AI tooling they can inspect and modify
