What our research says

Chatbase

The fastest route from a folder of help docs to a working support widget, and priced accordingly once real traffic arrives. Credits are the whole story: 700 messages a month at $32 is a small site's volume, and the jump to a plan that carries actual traffic is $120, then $400. Budget from expected conversations, not from the feature grid.

Pros

  • Crawl-and-embed setup produces a usable widget in an afternoon with no retrieval plumbing to write
  • Actions and human handoff mean it degrades into a ticket rather than a dead end
  • A real free tier exists for evaluation, and every paid plan carries a 7-day trial

Cons

  • API access is gated to Standard at $120/month, four times the entry price
  • Overage at $40 per 1,000 credits is steep next to the in-plan rate on Pro
  • Removing vendor branding costs $1,188/year, more than the entire Hobby plan
  • Free-tier agents are deleted after 14 days of inactivity, so an abandoned evaluation disappears

CustomGPT.ai

A packaged retrieval stack for teams that want a grounded chatbot without assembling their own; the connector breadth and compliance paperwork are what the price buys. At $99/month against a four-figure query cap, the cost per answer is high until volume justifies it.

Pros

  • Answers are constrained to ingested content, which materially cuts invented answers versus open chat
  • 100+ ingestion connectors and a very wide file-format list mean less pre-processing work
  • API supports programmatic agent creation, which suits agency resale
  • SOC 2 Type II certification is unusual at this price point

Cons

  • Query allowance is the real ceiling and it is low relative to the price
  • The step from Standard to Premium is five times the cost with nothing in between
  • Answer quality still depends entirely on how clean and current your source content is
  • No free plan; evaluation is limited to a trial

  • Support teams turning an existing help centre into a self-serve answer bot
  • Agencies spinning up client-branded bots and reselling them through the API
  • Companies that need SOC 2 evidence before any AI touches internal documents
