Use tool ↗About Xero
Xero is cloud accounting software for small businesses and the bookkeepers who service them: bank feeds and reconciliation, quotes and invoices, bills, expense claims, fixed assets, mileage and project tracking, with US payroll bolted on through Gusto. JAX, the AI assistant Xero has pushed across the product, answers questions about the books and automates routine work rather than sitting in a separate chat window. US pricing is three tiers separated mainly by invoice and bill volume, with analytics, benchmarking and cross-border payments reserved for the top plan. Xero Limited is a New Zealand company selling since 2006 and reports 5 million customers across 180-plus countries.

Pros & cons of Xero
The strongest QuickBooks alternative for small businesses that want an accountant-friendly ledger with a real ecosystem behind it, and JAX finally puts AI where the tedious reconciliation work happens. The catch is the Early plan: at $25 it looks cheap until you hit the 20-invoice ceiling and jump to $55.
Pros
- Unlimited users on every tier, so bookkeepers and owners are not charged per seat
- Bank reconciliation and bill capture through Hubdoc are part of the core plans
- Established adds multi-currency, industry benchmarking and cross-border bill payment
- Standard ACH payments are included rather than billed per transaction
Cons
- Early caps you at 20 invoices and 5 bills a month, which most trading businesses outgrow fast
- US payroll is not native — it costs $36/month plus $6 per person through Gusto
- The advertised entry price is a six-month promotion, not the ongoing rate
Best for
- Small businesses whose accountant already works in Xero
- Companies needing unlimited users on every plan
- Teams that want app-store integrations rather than a closed suite
Not for
- Freelancers issuing a handful of invoices who can live on a free tool
- US businesses wanting payroll included rather than a Gusto add-on
Watch out: The $2.50 and $5.50 figures on the pricing page are 90 percent promotional rates for six months; the real bill is $25 and $55.
