What our research says

Kick

Kick is aimed at founders and solo operators who want the ledger to keep itself, not at accountants who want control of every posting. The free tier is a real trial rather than a demo, and unlimited seats on every plan is unusual in this category. The gap is accountant-facing depth: accrual accounting and multi-entity only appear at $100 a month.

Pros

  • Auto-categorisation with editable rules plus receipt matching
  • A real general ledger with journal entries behind the reports, not just summaries
  • Unlimited team members on every plan, including the free one
  • MCP and CLI access to the ledger from the Basic tier upward

Cons

  • Free is capped at 250 transactions a year, which many businesses pass in a quarter
  • Accrual ledger, multi-entity and AR/AP need the $100/month Plus tier
  • No country, registered address or terms page reachable from the site

Xero

The strongest QuickBooks alternative for small businesses that want an accountant-friendly ledger with a real ecosystem behind it, and JAX finally puts AI where the tedious reconciliation work happens. The catch is the Early plan: at $25 it looks cheap until you hit the 20-invoice ceiling and jump to $55.

Pros

  • Unlimited users on every tier, so bookkeepers and owners are not charged per seat
  • Bank reconciliation and bill capture through Hubdoc are part of the core plans
  • Established adds multi-currency, industry benchmarking and cross-border bill payment
  • Standard ACH payments are included rather than billed per transaction

Cons

  • Early caps you at 20 invoices and 5 bills a month, which most trading businesses outgrow fast
  • US payroll is not native — it costs $36/month plus $6 per person through Gusto
  • The advertised entry price is a six-month promotion, not the ongoing rate

Which one fits

Choose Kick if you need

  • Founders and freelancers who want categorisation handled automatically
  • Cash-basis businesses that need a clean P&L at tax time
  • Operators running several entities who can justify the Plus tier

Choose Xero if you need

  • Small businesses whose accountant already works in Xero
  • Companies needing unlimited users on every plan
  • Teams that want app-store integrations rather than a closed suite
