Spreadsheet-shaped work platform for project and portfolio management, with AI columns and formula help.
Smartsheet runs projects out of a grid that behaves like a spreadsheet but carries dependencies, automations, forms, dashboards and portfolio rollups behind it. The AI layer is additive rather than the point: a conversational assistant, AI columns that summarise or classify data down a column, natural-language formula generation, text summarising and translation, and an AI dashboard builder. From the Business tier up you can expose sheets to outside models through MCP-enabled integrations with Claude, Gemini, Copilot and ChatGPT. It is sold per member per month by Smartsheet Inc. of Bellevue, Washington, founded in 2005 and taken private by Blackstone and Vista Equity Partners.
Pro is $9 per member/month billed yearly ($12 monthly) and caps at 10 members; Business is $19 billed yearly ($24 monthly) and adds unlimited free contributors and guests. Enterprise and Advanced Work Management are quoted. Pro is offered to new customers only.
Use tool ↗The choice for teams whose planning already lives in spreadsheets and who need governance on top — portfolio rollups, approvals, resource views. The AI features are competent additions to that, not a reason to switch. Per-member pricing plus free contributors works well for small core teams with many occasional participants, and badly the other way round.
Watch out: Smartsheet went private under Blackstone and Vista Equity — worth factoring into a long-term platform bet.
