What our research says

HelpCrunch

For a small support team it replaces three or four separate subscriptions — chat, inbox, knowledge base, email marketing — and unlimited contacts on every plan avoids the contact-count trap that makes Intercom expensive. The knowledge base is competent rather than remarkable. The real friction is pricing: the plan cost only appears after you move a slider, and the AI capacity most teams actually want is an extra line item on top.

Pros

  • Knowledge base articles double as training data for the AI agent and as self-service inside the chat widget
  • Unlimited contacts on all plans, so cost does not scale with audience size
  • REST API plus iOS and Android SDKs for embedding the widget
  • Add-on pricing for AI conversations and data sources is published in exact dollars

Cons

  • No static plan price anywhere — a slider computes it, and directories cannot quote a starting figure
  • AI conversation capacity above the plan allowance costs $29 per 100 conversations on top
  • AI agents are only included from the Pro tier upward, not on the entry plan

Intercom

The most complete bet on AI-first support: Fin's per-outcome billing aligns cost with actual resolutions, and the surrounding helpdesk is mature. The catch is the compound bill — seats plus $0.99 per Fin outcome — which at high ticket volume can exceed what flat-rate rivals charge.

Pros

  • Fin charges only when a conversation actually resolves
  • Full omnichannel inbox including phone and WhatsApp
  • 350+ integrations and a documented developer platform
  • Copilot and QA tooling for the human side of the team

Cons

  • Per-outcome fees stack on top of per-seat pricing
  • Advanced workflow features require the mid tier and up
  • Historically criticized for pricing complexity and creep
