Use tool ↗About TRAE
TRAE is a family of AI tools from ByteDance. TraeCode is a desktop IDE for macOS, Windows and Linux that combines chat, inline completion and an agent that edits files and runs commands, and it can switch between the IDE view and a SOLO mode. TraeWork is a separate assistant that handles general work tasks in cloud sessions, with desktop, web and iOS clients. The service launched internationally in January 2025 and now sells usage-based plans where the Auto model choice is free and named models draw on a monthly allowance.

Pros & cons of TRAE
A capable AI IDE for developers who want an agent-first editor with a free entry point and a clear dollar-per-usage ladder. The new TraeWork agent widens it beyond code, but that part is young. Anyone with strict data-residency or vendor rules should read the terms and privacy policy first, since the service is run by a ByteDance-linked entity.
Pros
- Free plan with Auto mode and a monthly autocomplete allowance
- Clear Pro, Pro+ and Ultra ladder with usage stated in dollars
- Desktop builds for macOS, Windows and Linux (deb and rpm)
- TraeWork adds web and iOS clients and up to 20 concurrent cloud tasks on Ultra
Cons
- Free plan is limited to Auto mode and limited usage
- Different models burn usage at different rates, which makes monthly cost hard to predict
- Enterprise purchasing is routed through BytePlus rather than the Trae site
Best for
- Developers trying an agent-first IDE with a free starting tier
- Teams that want a usage-based plan with a published $20 entry price
Not for
- Organizations that cannot send code to a ByteDance-run service
- Users who want a plain extension inside VS Code or JetBrains rather than a separate editor
Watch out: Usage is a dollar-denominated allowance, not unlimited requests, and costs differ by model, so a heavy agent session on a premium model can exhaust a Pro month quickly.
