Overview

About Sierra

Sierra builds customer-facing agents that carry a company's brand, follow its policies and complete tasks - order changes, billing, account updates - by connecting to the systems behind them, across chat, SMS, WhatsApp, email, voice and ChatGPT. Agents are assembled in Agent Studio or drafted by Ghostwriter from procedures and call transcripts, a context engine keeps customer memory across channels, and an insights layer offers conversation search, monitors, experiments and observability. Founded by Bret Taylor and Clay Bavor, the company lists Rocket Mortgage, Gap, SiriusXM, Hyatt, Uber, Vanguard and Santander among customers and holds SOC 2, ISO 27001, ISO 42001, HIPAA and PCI DSS certifications. Pricing is outcome-based and quoted; there is no public price list.

Editorial verdict

Pros & cons of Sierra

medium confidence

Sierra is the enterprise end of the support-agent market: the pitch is not a chatbot but an agent that can actually change an order or a policy inside your systems, priced on what it resolves. The customer list and the certification wall are real signals that large regulated companies have put it in front of their users. It is a procurement, not a purchase - no public price, no trial, and an integration project before anything goes live - so a company without a sizeable support operation has nothing to buy here.

Pros

  • Agents take actions in order, billing and account systems, not just answer questions
  • One agent runs across chat, SMS, WhatsApp, email, voice and ChatGPT
  • Outcome-based pricing aligns the bill with resolutions
  • Ghostwriter drafts agents from existing SOPs and transcripts, and the founders' track record is unusually strong

Cons

  • No public pricing, trial or self-serve path
  • Outcome pricing needs a contract definition of 'resolved' that favours neither side - read it closely
  • Integration with core systems is a project with real lead time
  • Vendor lock-in is high once customer memory and policies live in its context engine

Best for

  • Consumer brands and financial-services companies with high-volume support across chat and voice
  • Support leaders who want to pay per resolved case instead of per agent seat
  • Regulated industries that need HIPAA, PCI and ISO 42001 attestations from the vendor

Not for

  • Startups or SMBs that want to switch on a support bot this week on a card
  • Teams whose support is mostly answering FAQs - outcome pricing only pays off when the agent completes transactions

Watch out: How a 'resolution' is counted decides the bill - a case that the agent closes but the customer reopens by phone may still be charged, so define the metric in the contract before signing.
