Use tool ↗About ProWritingAid
ProWritingAid is a writing toolkit from Orpheus Technology aimed at fiction authors: it plans a book, tracks drafting sessions, line-edits with a grammar checker and reports on readability, repetition, pacing and dialogue, and critiques whole chapters or manuscripts with character analysis, a virtual beta reader and marketability analysis. The AI features, Rephrase, Sparks and Critique, are rationed by daily allowances on paid plans, and the vendor says they will not write your text for you. It runs in the browser and as a desktop editor for Mac and Windows, with integrations for Word, Google Docs, Scrivener, Apple Notes, Pages, Notion and Atticus. Free covers 500 words at a time; Premium is $10 a month billed yearly ($30 monthly, $399 lifetime) and Premium Pro $12 ($36 monthly, $699 lifetime). Founded in 2013 by Chris Banks; registered as Orpheus Technology Ltd in England.

Pros & cons of ProWritingAid
For novelists, ProWritingAid is the editor that looks at pacing, repetition, dialogue tags and chapter structure rather than just commas, and the yearly price is a third of the monthly one. The reports take time to learn and the newer AI critique features are rationed by daily caps even on paid plans. If you write emails and reports rather than manuscripts, you are paying for depth you will not use.
Pros
- Reports on style, readability, repetition, pacing and dialogue, not just grammar
- Chapter and manuscript critiques, character analysis and a virtual beta reader on paid plans
- Integrations across Word, Google Docs, Scrivener, browsers, Notion, Pages and a desktop editor
- Yearly Premium at $10 a month, plus a lifetime option at $399
Cons
- Monthly billing is three times the yearly rate ($30 versus $10)
- AI critique and Sparks are capped per day even on Premium (1 chapter critique, 5 Sparks)
- Free tier checks only 500 words at a time
- Report density is overwhelming at first and takes time to learn
Best for
- Fiction authors editing a full manuscript before querying or self-publishing
- Writers who want structural feedback (pacing, chapter critique, beta-reader style notes) alongside grammar
- Scrivener, Word and Google Docs users who want checks inside their existing tool
Not for
- Business and academic writers who mainly need a grammar checker
- Anyone expecting the AI to draft or rewrite whole passages, which the vendor says it will not do
Watch out: Refunds are a 3-day window on annual and lifetime plans and none at all on monthly, so test on the free tier before paying.
