What our research says

ProWritingAid

For novelists, ProWritingAid is the editor that looks at pacing, repetition, dialogue tags and chapter structure rather than just commas, and the yearly price is a third of the monthly one. The reports take time to learn and the newer AI critique features are rationed by daily caps even on paid plans. If you write emails and reports rather than manuscripts, you are paying for depth you will not use.

Pros

Reports on style, readability, repetition, pacing and dialogue, not just grammar
Chapter and manuscript critiques, character analysis and a virtual beta reader on paid plans
Integrations across Word, Google Docs, Scrivener, browsers, Notion, Pages and a desktop editor
Yearly Premium at $10 a month, plus a lifetime option at $399

Cons

Monthly billing is three times the yearly rate ($30 versus $10)
AI critique and Sparks are capped per day even on Premium (1 chapter critique, 5 Sparks)
Free tier checks only 500 words at a time
Report density is overwhelming at first and takes time to learn

Writefull Academizer

Academizer solves one narrow problem well: turning a casual sentence into something that reads like it belongs in a paper. It is a single free widget rather than a full editing suite, so students who need broader language feedback will end up looking at Writefull's paid Word or Overleaf add-in instead.

Pros

Free with no account required for the core rewrite
Built specifically for academic register rather than general paraphrasing
Backed by a team with an academic-linguistics background and journal-trained language models
Part of a wider free toolset (title generator, abstract generator, GPT detector)

Cons

Handles single sentences, not whole documents
Deeper feedback and unlimited use require Writefull's separate paid Word or Overleaf add-in
No mobile app or browser extension, only the web widget
