What our research says

GrammarBot

A free, narrowly scoped iOS grammar and rewrite app rather than a browser tool, useful mainly for someone who wants grammar help built into their phone keyboard workflow. Being a free solo-developer app rather than a funded product is worth weighing against needing consistent long-term support.

Pros

  • Free to download with no visible in-app purchase pricing
  • Covers rewriting and tone shifting, not just spelling and grammar
  • Supports translation across six other languages in the same app

Cons

  • iOS only, no Android, web, or desktop version
  • Built and maintained by a solo developer rather than a company, per the App Store listing
  • Easy to confuse with the unrelated GrammarBot.io API product of the same name

ProWritingAid

For novelists, ProWritingAid is the editor that looks at pacing, repetition, dialogue tags and chapter structure rather than just commas, and the yearly price is a third of the monthly one. The reports take time to learn and the newer AI critique features are rationed by daily caps even on paid plans. If you write emails and reports rather than manuscripts, you are paying for depth you will not use.

Pros

  • Reports on style, readability, repetition, pacing and dialogue, not just grammar
  • Chapter and manuscript critiques, character analysis and a virtual beta reader on paid plans
  • Integrations across Word, Google Docs, Scrivener, browsers, Notion, Pages and a desktop editor
  • Yearly Premium at $10 a month, plus a lifetime option at $399

Cons

  • Monthly billing is three times the yearly rate ($30 versus $10)
  • AI critique and Sparks are capped per day even on Premium (1 chapter critique, 5 Sparks)
  • Free tier checks only 500 words at a time
  • Report density is overwhelming at first and takes time to learn

Which one fits

Choose GrammarBot if you need

  • iPhone users wanting free grammar and tone help outside the browser
  • Multilingual users needing translation alongside grammar checks

Choose ProWritingAid if you need

  • Fiction authors editing a full manuscript before querying or self-publishing
  • Writers who want structural feedback (pacing, chapter critique, beta-reader style notes) alongside grammar
  • Scrivener, Word and Google Docs users who want checks inside their existing tool
