LayerBack

LayerBack solves a specific annoyance: someone sends a diagram as a flat image, and you need to actually edit it. Converting to real shapes and connectors in Visio, PowerPoint, and draw.io formats, plus API and MCP access for automation, makes it more than a one-off web toy, though the free tier's 10 credits won't go far.

Pros

  • Outputs to real editable formats (Visio, PowerPoint, draw.io), not just a re-embedded image
  • Provides both a REST API and an MCP server for agent-driven automation
  • Failed conversions are automatically refunded
  • Annual billing cuts the monthly price roughly in half

Cons

Lucidchart

The default choice for team diagramming: data-linked shapes and layers handle diagrams that outgrow a whiteboard tool, and the integration list means the diagram ends up where the work already happens. Per-seat pricing with a three-user minimum on Team makes it expensive for small groups, and Lucid keeps moving the product's URLs around.
