What our research says

Cursor

The default choice for developers who want agentic coding inside a real editor, with cloud agents, PR review and multi-model access that large engineering orgs have already standardized on. The catch is the bill: agent-heavy use runs past plan allowances and overages are billed in arrears, so costs need active monitoring.

Pros

  • Agents work with repository-wide context, in-editor and in the cloud
  • Multi-model access includes frontier models plus in-house Composer
  • Free Hobby tier exists for trying agent workflows
  • Widely adopted in large enterprises, so tooling and docs mature fast

Cons

  • Real monthly cost is elastic once usage-based pricing kicks in
  • Pro+ and Ultra pricing is shown only through a plan selector, hurting comparability
  • Proprietary editor lock-in versus plain VS Code with extensions

Nimbalyst

Nimbalyst suits developers and product people who already pay for Claude Code or Codex and want to see and steer several agent sessions at once, with diagrams, specs and mockups in the same window. It adds nothing on the model side, so anyone without an agent subscription, or happy in a terminal, gets little from it.

Pros

  • MIT-licensed and free for individuals with no feature cap
  • Diff review for every AI edit before it lands in a file
  • Worktree isolation for parallel agent sessions
  • Built-in editors for Markdown, CSV, Excalidraw, Mermaid and data models

Cons

  • Depends on a third-party agent and its separate billing
  • Teams pricing is announced but still in beta, so the paid tier is not settled
  • Young product, first public code in late 2025

Which one fits

Choose Cursor if you need

  • Professional developers running agents on large existing codebases
  • Teams that want code review, cloud agents and editor in one subscription
  • VS Code users wanting a familiar editor with deeper AI integration

Choose Nimbalyst if you need

  • Developers running several Claude Code or Codex sessions in parallel
  • Product managers who write specs and mockups that agents then implement
  • Small teams wanting shared docs and trackers that agents can edit
