AutoGPT
The project that started the autonomous-agent wave is now sold as a roster of named AI specialists you brief in chat, with the low-code workflow builder still underneath. Self-hosted it remains a strong, free agent platform for internal use; the cloud version is expensive once you add the credits that actual workflow runs consume.
Pros
- Open source outside the platform directory, with a very large contributor community
- Self-hosting is free for internal use and runs on Linux, macOS or Windows through WSL 2
- Prebuilt Experts plus a visual block builder and marketplace lower the starting effort
- Public REST API, MCP tool support and per-Expert spending caps on the cloud plans
Cons
- Cloud Pro at $42.50 to $50 a month still needs pay-as-you-go credits for workflow runs
- Polyform Shield on the platform directory rules out commercial redistribution
- Cloud pricing jumps from Pro to $272 or more for Max with nothing in between, and the Team plan is still marked coming soon
