"Legal AI software" is three purchases wearing one label: a Word add-in that redlines a contract against your playbook, a research assistant that answers a legal question with citations, and a drafting tool that produces the first version of a document. Most vendors sell some of each, but every product is built around one job. The catalog's legal AI, contract review and legal research pages are sorted by that job, which is the first cut to make.
The second cut matters more: when the tool states a proposition of law, does it hand you a source you can open? That property separates a research platform from a chatbot and decides what you must verify before anything goes out under your name.
Three jobs, three kinds of product
Contract review and redlining. The tool compares each clause of the other side's draft with your standard positions and proposes markups, usually inside Microsoft Word. Spellbook sells a Word add-in plus a multi-document agent called Associate. Luminance turns a playbook into "structured standards" and generates "context-aware markups directly in Microsoft Word". Genie AI drafts, reviews and redlines in Word and Excel, and is the only one of the three with a published price. Robin AI sells review and search to enterprise legal teams.
Research with citations. The product retrieves authority from a database and writes an answer that cites it. CoCounsel from Thomson Reuters calls its Deep Research "Westlaw-grounded" and says "every citation is linked so attorneys can click through and verify the work themselves". Clio Work answers from vLex's library of more than one billion documents across more than 110 jurisdictions. Harvey and Legora serve large firms and in-house teams, by demo. Judicio is the self-serve option, with "every answer cited to page and passage".
Drafting. Everything above drafts something; the difference is what it drafts from. CoCounsel Essentials pairs a drafting skill with document analysis in Word. IP Author drafts patent applications and office action responses for the USPTO and EPO.
Why invented citations are the specific risk
A redline that misses a clause costs a second read. A research answer that cites a case that does not exist costs a sanctions hearing. In Mata v. Avianca, a lawyer in the Southern District of New York filed an opposition citing six decisions ChatGPT had produced; asked whether they were real, the chatbot said yes. Judge Castel issued an order to show cause in May 2023 and fined the lawyers $5,000 that June.
Purpose-built tools reduce the problem without removing it. A Stanford-led study posted in May 2024 tested Lexis+ AI, Westlaw AI-Assisted Research and Ask Practical Law AI and found they "each hallucinate between 17% and 33% of the time": fewer than GPT-4, but short of the hallucination-free marketing the authors set out to test.
"Grounded" and "cited" name two mechanisms. Grounded means the system retrieves from a fixed corpus of real authority, such as Westlaw or vLex, before it writes. Cited means each proposition links to its document. A link you can click is a claim you can check, not one that has been checked: Judicio's own FAQ says a research snapshot does not confirm the authority is still current. Open every citation, read the passage, run the citator.
Where your client's documents go
Confidentiality questions are plumbing questions, so ask them that way.
- Who processes the document? The vendor and, usually, a model provider behind it. Harvey "requires Zero Data Retention (ZDR) by model providers"; Spellbook has ZDR agreements with OpenAI and Anthropic.
- Is training off by default? Harvey, CoCounsel, Legora, Genie AI and Judicio each state that customer documents never train their models. Treat silence as a no.
- Who sets retention? Harvey lets customers set retention policies and delete data at any time. AI Lawyer's homepage says chat history "is stored indefinitely", while its FAQ says uploaded documents are processed once and not saved.
- Where is it processed? Harvey offers in-region processing in the EU, Switzerland, the US and Australia; Spellbook names data centers in Canada and the US; Outlex is hosted in the EU.
The ABA's Formal Opinion 512 of July 29, 2024 frames this as existing duties: competence with the tool, confidentiality, supervision, candor toward the tribunal and what you may bill.

What vendors publish, and what they do not
The market splits not between cheap and expensive but between vendors who put a price on the page and those who put a demo form there. Every cell comes from the vendor's own pages, checked the way we verify every listing.

Self-serve tools price per seat per month, discounted yearly: Genie AI's Pro plan is $708 a year, or $75 a month billed monthly; its Business plan covers five users for $259 a month billed annually. Enterprise tools price per license on custom terms; Genie's own Enterprise tier "starts from $600/month", the only published floor in that group. Thomson Reuters sits between: firms of up to ten attorneys can buy CoCounsel Essentials or CoCounsel Legal online, with two- and three-year terms discounted, but the figure appears only after you enter firm details, so we do not quote one. The units are explained in our guide to AI tool pricing models.
- Pro, annual billing$59
- Pro, monthly billing$75
- Business (5 users), annual$259
- Enterprisefrom $600
Robin AI's pricing page returned a 404 when we checked, and the site routes everything to a demo request. In December 2025 its legal services team of about 75 people moved to the law firm Scissero after a funding round failed, with the technology group still in talks with another buyer. Ask who owns and supports the software before you sign.
What a solo practitioner can buy without a sales call
For contracts, Genie AI's Pro plan is the clearest purchase: one user, drafting, review and redlining in Word, unlimited exports and a no-training promise, for $59 a month on the annual plan. Outlex is the European equivalent at β¬99 a month, with a seven-day trial that needs no card. Spellbook gives seven days free but quotes on a demo call.
For research, a firm of one to three attorneys can buy CoCounsel Essentials or CoCounsel Legal online, and Judicio's plans are self-serve behind a seven-day trial. Clio Work has been sold standalone to small firms since April 2026, but the only price in print is the $199 per user per month it cost as a Clio Manage add-on at launch in October 2025; ask Clio for the current figure.
AI Lawyer at $19.99 a month is a different class of product. Its own blog calls it "information and documents, not representation", and it drafts from attorney-written templates rather than a case-law corpus. Fair for a form; not a research platform.
Outlex
69AI legal assistant plus on-demand lawyer credits for contracts, compliance, and legal questions.
Judicio
59AI workspace for contract review, cross-jurisdiction legal research, and litigation timelines.
Consumer legal chat, document review and template drafting
AI that drafts full patent applications and Office Action responses for corporate patent teams and law firms.
Questions people ask
Is there free legal AI software?
Genie AI has a free plan with limited AI tokens and exports locked until you upgrade; Outlex, Judicio, Spellbook and IP Author offer trials of seven to fourteen days. No platform built on Westlaw or vLex is free: the corpus is the product.
Can AI replace a paralegal for contract review?
It can do the first pass: flag clauses that depart from your playbook, propose standard language, summarize what changed. It cannot own the result. The ABA's 2024 opinion makes supervising the tool your duty.
How much does legal AI software cost?
Self-serve contract tools run from about $59 to β¬99 per seat per month. Harvey, Legora and Luminance publish no price at all, and Thomson Reuters shows CoCounsel prices only after you enter your firm's details.
Is it safe to upload client documents to a legal AI tool?
Safe is a property of the contract, not the product. Look for a written no-training statement, zero-retention terms with the model provider, retention you control and a processing region you can name. Harvey, Spellbook, CoCounsel, Legora and Genie AI publish most of these; a tool that publishes none has answered the question.
