What our research says

Speechify

The most complete listen-to-anything reader on a phone, but the $29 monthly sticker is a trap — the same thing is $139 a year, and the free tier is deliberately unpleasant.

Pros

  • Handles almost any input, including scanned pages captured through the camera
  • Voices stay intelligible all the way up to 5x playback
  • One library syncs between phone, browser extension and Mac

Cons

  • Monthly billing costs about 2.5x the annual rate for the same features
  • Free tier is held to 10 robotic voices and 1.5x speed
  • Studio and the developer API are separate products on a separate domain
  • API pricing is unpublished and gated behind a sales conversation

Voiser

Volume pricing rather than seats makes it noticeably cheaper than the big TTS names for occasional work - $5 buys 30,000 characters outright. The language coverage on both sides is wide, and transcription accepts YouTube links directly. The catch is that the site you land on is the legacy one: the vendor is migrating to voiser.ai, and the cheap Personal tier has no API access at all.

Pros

  • 1,000+ voices across 75 languages and 140 dialects for text-to-speech
  • Transcription in 71 languages with timestamps, keyword detection and speaker identification on higher tiers
  • Accepts YouTube links directly for transcription and subtitling
  • Sold by volume - $5 for 30,000 characters, $2 for 30 transcription minutes
  • Extras included: voice cloning, talking avatars, WordPress plugin, JavaScript page reader

Cons

  • The Personal tier excludes API access; it starts at the $17/month business tier
  • The site carries a banner directing users to a separate rebuilt product at voiser.ai
  • Free trial is 50 characters and 5 minutes, too small to judge voice quality
  • File hosting duration varies by tier, at six months on the entry plan
