What our research says

Audioread

The private-podcast-feed model is the whole point: you listen in the podcast app you already use instead of learning a new reader. If you want in-app highlighting, speed-reading and study features, Speechify beats it outright.

Pros

  • Standard RSS output means no proprietary player and real offline support
  • Multiple ingestion paths: extension, URL paste, email forwarding, RSS subscription
  • A documented API with OAuth exists, which is rare for a consumer read-aloud tool
  • Handles PDFs and Word documents, not just web articles

Cons

  • Pricing is not visible without loading the app, which makes comparison shopping annoying
  • No public company or team information anywhere on the site
  • No highlighting or read-along text view since playback happens outside the product
  • Voice selection and quality depend on the plan, and limits are not documented publicly

Speechify

The most complete listen-to-anything reader on a phone, but the $29 monthly sticker is a trap — the same thing is $139 a year, and the free tier is deliberately unpleasant.

Pros

  • Handles almost any input, including scanned pages captured through the camera
  • Voices stay intelligible all the way up to 5x playback
  • One library syncs between phone, browser extension and Mac

Cons

  • Monthly billing costs about 2.5x the annual rate for the same features
  • Free tier is held to 10 robotic voices and 1.5x speed
  • Studio and the developer API are separate products on a separate domain
  • API pricing is unpublished and gated behind a sales conversation
