What our research says

Audie AI

Audie AI is a narrow, purpose-built tool for turning a finished manuscript into an audiobook file rather than a general voice platform. The pay-per-token model suits authors who publish occasionally more than teams needing a monthly line-item, and the promised five-minute turnaround is fast if the output quality holds up at that speed.

Pros

  • Automatic chapter detection removes manual file splitting
  • No subscription lock-in -- pay only for the book being made
  • Publisher-tier plans include API access for bulk pipelines
  • Output is explicitly formatted for Audible and Amazon submission

Cons

  • Entry cost of $99 is high for a single short book compared to per-minute competitors
  • No visible free trial that produces a usable finished file
  • Voice quality claims are not independently verifiable from the site alone

Speechify

The most complete listen-to-anything reader on a phone, but the $29 monthly sticker is a trap — the same thing is $139 a year, and the free tier is deliberately unpleasant.

Pros

  • Handles almost any input, including scanned pages captured through the camera
  • Voices stay intelligible all the way up to 5x playback
  • One library syncs between phone, browser extension and Mac

Cons

  • Monthly billing costs about 2.5x the annual rate for the same features
  • Free tier is held to 10 robotic voices and 1.5x speed
  • Studio and the developer API are separate products on a separate domain
  • API pricing is unpublished and gated behind a sales conversation

Which one fits

Choose Audie AI if you need

  • Self-published authors converting a single book to audio
  • Small presses comparing narrator costs against a flat per-book fee
  • Anyone who wants an audiobook without an ongoing subscription

Choose Speechify if you need

  • Students and professionals working through long PDFs and articles by ear
  • Readers with dyslexia or low vision who need OCR capture plus playback
  • Developers who want the Simba voices without building a reader app
