Sora was OpenAI's video generator: text, images or existing clips in, short videos out, with storyboarding, re-editing of earlier generations, cameos and a social feed of remixable creations, shipped as a standalone web and mobile app alongside access from paid ChatGPT plans and a developer API. On 24 March 2026 OpenAI announced it was discontinuing it to move compute toward other work and keep the team on world-model research; the app and website closed on 26 April 2026 and the API followed on 24 September 2026, with users told to export their libraries because content would be deleted after the deadlines. Today the domain answers only with a bot challenge and nothing is sold.

Pros & cons of Sora
Sora is over. OpenAI announced the shutdown on 24 March 2026, closed the app and website on 26 April and switched the API off on 24 September, and said user libraries would be deleted once the deadlines passed. Anyone arriving here is choosing a replacement, and the realistic ones are Google Veo for quality, Kling or Hailuo for price, and Runway for an editor around the model.
