Meshy vs Skybox AI

Two fact sheets from our own research, side by side — pricing, platforms, API access and status re-checked by us rather than quoted from the vendors. Both start at $20. Both have a free tier. Both ship a public API.

What our research says

Meshy

The default pick for fast 3D from prompts or concept art, and the auto-rigging plus first-party engine plugins are what separate it from the pack. Topology is still dense enough that hero assets need a retopo pass before they go into production.

Pros

  • Free plan gives 100 credits a month, enough to genuinely evaluate it
  • Auto-rigging with 600+ motion presets removes an entire manual stage
  • First-party plugins for Blender, Unity, Unreal, Godot, Maya and Roblox Studio
  • REST API opens at the $20 Pro tier rather than behind enterprise sales

Cons

  • Free-tier output is licensed CC BY 4.0; asset ownership only comes with a paid plan
  • Generated meshes are often dense and need retopology for animation-heavy work
  • Monthly credits reset and vanish; only purchased top-up credits carry over
  • Concurrency is capped (10 simultaneous tasks on Pro), which throttles bulk runs

Skybox AI

The most direct route from a sentence to a usable 360 environment, and the export formats are the reason to pick it — 32-bit HDRI and depth meshes mean the output lights a scene rather than just decorating a sphere. Credits are the real currency, and at 100 a month on the entry tier iterative prompting eats them quickly. Commercial rights are clean, which matters for studio work.

Pros

  • Equirectangular output up to 16K with 32-bit HDRI export on higher tiers
  • Direct paths into Unity, Unreal and Blender plus Quest, Vision Pro and AndroidXR
  • Full API with custom rate limits on the Business tier
  • Commercial licensing and stated IP ownership on all paid plans

Cons

  • Credit caps of 100 to 500 a month make iteration expensive
  • HDRI, 3D meshes and priority queue are gated behind the $48 tier
  • The free tier cannot export anything, only preview

Which one fits

Choose Meshy if you need

  • Indie game devs filling scenes with props and background assets
  • Concept artists turning 2D sketches into blockout meshes
  • 3D printing, where output is watertight and slicer-ready
  • Pipelines that want 3D generation available behind an API

Choose Skybox AI if you need

  • Filling a VR or Unity scene with a background and matching light in minutes
  • Previs, matte-painting bases and LED-volume backdrops
  • Indie and Roblox or Fortnite Creative builders without an environment artist
