Image to STL vs Meshy

Two fact sheets from our own research, side by side — pricing, platforms, API access and status re-checked by us rather than quoted from the vendors. Image to STL starts at $9.90, Meshy at $20. Only Meshy has a free tier. Only Meshy ships a public API.

What our research says

Image to STL

ImgToSTL is useful for turning a single photo or sketch into a printable rough 3D shape without modeling it by hand, though anyone expecting precise dimensional accuracy for a photo subject will need to clean the result up in real modeling software afterward. Credit-pack pricing means there's no way to try an actual generation for free.

Pros

  • Uses AI to reconstruct volume rather than a simple flat extrusion
  • Accepts sketches and concept art, not just photos
  • Commercial licensing included on paid credit packs

Cons

  • No free generation is available, only example previews before you pay
  • Credit-pack pricing without a subscription option may cost more for frequent use
  • No company or location information disclosed on the site

Meshy

The default pick for fast 3D from prompts or concept art, and the auto-rigging plus first-party engine plugins are what separate it from the pack. Topology is still dense enough that hero assets need a retopo pass before they go into production.

Pros

  • Free plan gives 100 credits a month, enough to genuinely evaluate it
  • Auto-rigging with 600+ motion presets removes an entire manual stage
  • First-party plugins for Blender, Unity, Unreal, Godot, Maya and Roblox Studio
  • REST API opens at the $20 Pro tier rather than behind enterprise sales

Cons

  • Free-tier output is licensed CC BY 4.0; asset ownership only comes with a paid plan
  • Generated meshes are often dense and need retopology for animation-heavy work
  • Monthly credits reset and vanish; only purchased top-up credits carry over
  • Concurrency is capped (10 simultaneous tasks on Pro), which throttles bulk runs

Which one fits

Choose Image to STL if you need

  • Hobbyist 3D printing from photos or sketches rather than precise CAD needs
  • Concept artists wanting a rough 3D print of a 2D character or object design

Choose Meshy if you need

  • Indie game devs filling scenes with props and background assets
  • Concept artists turning 2D sketches into blockout meshes
  • 3D printing, where output is watertight and slicer-ready
  • Pipelines that want 3D generation available behind an API
