What our research says

DoNotPay

Useful as a cheap template-and-letter machine for low-stakes consumer annoyances, and nothing more — the FTC has formally ruled that presenting it as a lawyer substitute is deceptive. Treat any output as a starting draft you are responsible for.

Pros

  • Very wide catalogue of small consumer tasks in one subscription
  • Turns filings and letters into short questionnaires instead of blank pages
  • Cheap relative to any hourly legal help for trivial disputes

Cons

  • FTC order in Feb 2025 over 'AI lawyer' claims — quality was formally found not to match the marketing
  • No published pricing page, which makes the recurring charge hard to evaluate before signing up
  • Persistent user complaints about cancellation friction and surprise renewals
  • Homepage press section has not visibly refreshed since late 2024, so product momentum is unclear

Pine AI

Genuinely useful if you have real money trapped in recurring bills or an unresolved dispute and you cannot face another phone tree — but the maths only works when the savings clear the subscription. Do not pay $39/month to cancel one $12 subscription.

Pros

  • Handles the actual phone call, which is the part every competing app avoids
  • Runs 5 to 20 tasks in parallel depending on tier, so a backlog clears at once
  • Native iOS and Android apps rather than a web form
  • Annual plans remove the percentage success fee on bill negotiation

Cons

  • Credit accounting is opaque — a plan states 6,000 credits, not how many calls that buys
  • Monthly billing costs about 32% more than the advertised annual rate
  • You are granting an agent account access and authority to speak on your behalf
  • No API or integration surface of any kind

Which one fits

Choose DoNotPay if you need

  • Contesting a parking ticket, late fee or bank charge where the downside is small
  • Generating a first-draft demand or cancellation letter you will read before sending
  • People who would otherwise do nothing because the paperwork is annoying

Choose Pine AI if you need

  • Negotiating down cable, internet, mobile or insurance bills
  • Cancelling subscriptions hidden behind retention phone lines
  • Chasing refunds and compensation for flights, deliveries and hotel bookings
  • People who cannot spend an hour on hold during business hours
