DoNotPay

Useful as a cheap template-and-letter machine for low-stakes consumer annoyances, and nothing more — the FTC has formally ruled that presenting it as a lawyer substitute is deceptive. Treat any output as a starting draft you are responsible for.

Pros

  • Very wide catalogue of small consumer tasks in one subscription
  • Turns filings and letters into short questionnaires instead of blank pages
  • Cheap relative to any hourly legal help for trivial disputes

Cons

  • FTC order in Feb 2025 over 'AI lawyer' claims — quality was formally found not to match the marketing
  • No published pricing page, which makes the recurring charge hard to evaluate before signing up
  • Persistent user complaints about cancellation friction and surprise renewals
  • Homepage press section has not visibly refreshed since late 2024, so product momentum is unclear

v-Lawyer

A cheap consumer legal assistant covering templates, questions and a law dictionary. At around ten dollars a month it sits below the better-known consumer legal tools, but the listing is unclaimed by its author and the site would not open for us, so almost nothing here is verified against the product. Treat it as a lead to check, not a recommendation.

Pros

  • Covers drafting, question answering and terminology lookup in one subscription
  • Entry price of about ten dollars a month undercuts most consumer legal tools
  • Offers virtual consultations alongside the automated features
  • Sharing and collaboration are built in rather than export-only

Cons

  • The vendor's site is behind a bot wall, so none of the feature claims could be checked at source
  • No company, jurisdiction or team is named anywhere reachable
  • The directory listing is marked as unclaimed by its author
  • No ratings or reviews exist to corroborate quality

Which one fits

Choose DoNotPay if you need

  • Contesting a parking ticket, late fee or bank charge where the downside is small
