Overview

About Reason

Reason, formerly Ara, is a cloud coding agent built around GitHub issues. You connect a repository and assign an issue; the agent reproduces the problem in an isolated cloud session, writes and tests a fix, and opens a pull request with a screen recording, logs and a review-ready diff. Sessions can be started from the web app, a Mac app that can use local files, tools and ports, iOS or a CLI, and an HTTP API with per-user keys covers programmatic use. The company, Ara Software, Inc. of San Francisco, is backed by Y Combinator; its terms describe auto-renewing subscriptions and usage credits, but no price list is public since the rename.

Editorial verdict

Pros & cons of Reason

medium confidence

Reason, the renamed Ara, acts like an async engineer you assign issues to: it reproduces the bug, writes the fix and hands back a pull request with evidence instead of just a diff. The recordings, logs and tests are meant to cut the review overhead of trusting an agent blindly. It suits teams already working from GitHub issues; since the rename there is no public price list, so cost-sensitive buyers have to sign in to see what it charges.

Pros

  • Attaches screen recordings and logs to every pull request it opens
  • Runs from the web, a Mac app with local file and port access, iOS, a CLI or an HTTP API
  • Publishes its benchmark methodology and runner in a public repository
  • Named company and jurisdiction: Ara Software, Inc., under California law

Cons

  • No public price list since the rename — the old pricing page redirects to the home page
  • Subscriptions auto-renew and refunds are at the company's discretion
  • The privacy policy says product analytics include session replay of on-screen content

Best for

  • Engineering teams that triage work through GitHub issues
  • Teams wanting evidence (recordings, logs) attached to AI-written PRs
  • Developers who want to start agent runs from the web, a Mac, a phone or an API

Not for

  • Developers who just want in-editor autocomplete
  • Solo projects without a GitHub issue workflow

Watch out: Formerly Ara at ara.so, which now redirects to reasonmachines.com. The free $10 credit and $20 to $200 tiers listed before the rename could not be confirmed, so check in-app billing before assigning large jobs.
