Use tool ↗About Ai Helper
Ai Helper is a desktop app for Mac, Windows and Linux that opens a chat window from a keyboard shortcut, or takes text selected in another app and explains, translates or rephrases it. It connects to OpenAI, Gemini, Azure and OpenRouter, covering over 30 models, and ships 50-plus built-in prompts plus typewriter and paste modes for code editors. The free version is capped at 10 basic queries a day; a cloud plan supplies the vendor's model access by monthly query allowance, and a local plan is a one-time licence for using your own API key. The public changelog stops at version 1.3.2 from January 2024.

Pros & cons of Ai Helper
Ai Helper puts several model providers behind one desktop shortcut and works on all three major operating systems, and the one-time local licence is a fair deal if you already pay for an API key. It is no longer simply free: the free tier stops at 10 queries a day, and the changelog has not moved since January 2024, so buy only what you can use while it still runs.
Pros
- Runs on Mac, Windows and Linux
- Several providers and over 30 models behind one window
- One-time local licence from $29 for bring-your-own-key use
- Select-text actions to explain, translate or rephrase inside other apps
Cons
- Free tier is capped at 10 basic queries a day
- No release in the public changelog since version 1.3.2 in January 2024
- Little operator detail beyond the company name GEEKER LTD in the terms
- GPT-4 queries on the cloud plan consume 30 allowance units each
Best for
- People who want a shortcut-driven chat window instead of a browser tab
- Users with their own OpenAI key who prefer a one-time licence to a subscription
- Linux users, whom many desktop AI clients skip
Not for
- Anyone who needs an actively maintained app with recent releases
- Teams that need documented data handling and a named company with an address before installing
Watch out: On the cloud plan a GPT-4 query costs 30 units of the monthly allowance, so 2,500 queries shrink to about 83 GPT-4 answers; the local plan with your own key avoids that arithmetic.
