Free to use while the app remains in beta. After release the site lists a lifetime licence discounted to $58.99 from $119.99, Basic at $10/month or $119.99/year (list $159.99), and Personal at $11.87/month or $142.49/year — the only tier where the vendor covers API usage, at 750,000 words a month. Other tiers require your own OpenAI API key, and unlocking bring-your-own-key on iOS is a separate $25 in-app purchase.
Use tool ↗About WriteMage
WriteMage puts a ChatGPT prompt box on top of whatever Mac app you are in, Spotlight-style, so you can draft or rewrite text without switching windows or pasting between apps. It keeps session memory, stores chat history locally with labels, and ships a GUI prompt editor for customising the instructions it sends. On iOS the same thing arrives as a system keyboard usable in any app from the store. It is an indie product from a single developer, still labelled beta on the site, and most tiers expect you to supply your own OpenAI API key.

Pros & cons of WriteMage
The idea is right — an AI prompt floating over any app beats copying text into a browser tab — and the bring-your-own-key model makes it far cheaper than subscription assistants. The catch is maturity: the app has been in beta since its first build in late 2022, the site still advertises a launch sale for a final version that has not shipped, and there is no company behind it.
Pros
- Overlay works across any macOS app without copy-paste
- Native iOS keyboard extends the same access to the phone
- Chat history stored locally, and the developer says the app ships no telemetry
- A one-time lifetime licence is offered instead of a subscription
Cons
- Still in beta years after the first build, with no visible release date
- Most tiers require you to supply and fund your own OpenAI key
- No company details, terms page or changelog reachable on the site
Best for
- Mac users who want an AI prompt available inside every app
- People who already pay for OpenAI API access and want a cheap front end
- Anyone who wants chat history kept on their own machine
Not for
- Teams needing support commitments, invoicing or an SLA
- Windows and Linux users, and anyone unwilling to manage an API key
Watch out: The site's urgency copy — a launch sale 'available until the final version is released', which 'should be released this month' — has evidently been up for a long time. Treat the roadmap as stalled and buy the lifetime deal only if the current beta already does what you need.
