What our research says

Speechify

The most complete listen-to-anything reader on a phone, but the $29 monthly sticker is a trap — the same thing is $139 a year, and the free tier is deliberately unpleasant.

Pros

  • Handles almost any input, including scanned pages captured through the camera
  • Voices stay intelligible all the way up to 5x playback
  • One library syncs between phone, browser extension and Mac

Cons

  • Monthly billing costs about 2.5x the annual rate for the same features
  • Free tier is held to 10 robotic voices and 1.5x speed
  • Studio and the developer API are separate products on a separate domain
  • API pricing is unpublished and gated behind a sales conversation

Summ-it

The good idea here is not the narration, which everyone does, but the queue around it: forward an email, get it in a playlist, and let Catch Up flatten a week's backlog into one briefing. Item caps rather than minute caps make the plans easy to reason about, which is rarer than it should be.

  • Ingests articles, PDFs, newsletters, YouTube and email, not just web pages
  • Choice between full narration and a summary of adjustable length, per item
  • Ask returns answers with citations back to the saved item
  • CarPlay and Android Auto support plus offline downloads

Cons

  • Monthly item caps on every tier, including the paid ones
  • No company name published; only Israeli governing law in the terms
  • No API and no export of the generated audio described
