Speechify

The most complete listen-to-anything reader on a phone, but the $29 monthly sticker is a trap — the same thing is $139 a year, and the free tier is deliberately unpleasant.

Pros

  • Handles almost any input, including scanned pages captured through the camera
  • Voices stay intelligible all the way up to 5x playback
  • One library syncs between phone, browser extension and Mac

Cons

Summ-it

The good idea here is not the narration, which everyone does, but the queue around it: forward an email, get it in a playlist, and let Catch Up flatten a week's backlog into one briefing. Credits are counted per article rather than per minute, so the plans are easy to reason about, and the free tier is generous if the device voice is good enough for you.
