Overview

About Speak

Speak teaches languages by getting learners talking out loud: lessons introduce phrases native speakers use, drill them until they feel natural, then apply them in open-ended conversation with the Speak Tutor, which responds in real time and corrects pronunciation and phrasing. English speakers can learn Spanish, French, Korean, Japanese, Italian and Simplified Chinese, and the app also teaches English to speakers of other languages, with a business edition and admin portal for teams. It runs on iOS and Android with sign-up on the web. There is a 7-day free trial, then Premium or Premium Plus, which adds personalised lessons, custom review and the full tutor; the site publishes no prices and says they vary by plan, region and promotion. Speak is built by Speakeasy Labs, Inc. of San Francisco, an OpenAI partner backed by the OpenAI Startup Fund.

Editorial verdict

Pros & cons of Speak

medium confidence

Speak is the app to pick if your problem is that you can read a language but freeze when you have to talk: every lesson pushes you to say full sentences and the tutor talks back. It is weaker on grammar explanation and reading, and the price is hidden until you are inside the trial. Six target languages for English speakers is a narrow menu next to Duolingo or Babbel.

Pros

  • Lessons are built around speaking aloud, with real-time pronunciation and phrasing feedback
  • Open-ended AI tutor roleplays (ordering, reservations) go beyond scripted drills
  • 7-day free trial before any charge
  • Built with OpenAI and backed by its startup fund, so model quality tracks the frontier

Cons

  • No prices on the website; they vary by region and promotion and appear only in-app
  • Six languages for English speakers, far fewer than mainstream rivals
  • Fees are non-refundable and cancellation needs three days' notice before renewal
  • The method depends on speaking to your phone, which is awkward in public

Best for

  • Learners who understand more than they can say and need speaking practice
  • People preparing for travel or work conversations in Spanish, French, Korean, Japanese, Italian or Chinese
  • Teams buying speaking practice for staff through the business edition

Not for

  • Learners of languages outside the six offered
  • Anyone who wants to compare prices on the website before installing the app

Watch out: The trial converts automatically and the terms call fees non-refundable, so cancel before day seven if you are not continuing.
