What our research says

Lingolette

Aimed at the awkward middle of language learning that Duolingo handles badly: you can read but freeze when speaking. The daily-article-plus-voice-chat loop is a sensible shape for that, and dialect choice is a nice touch. The catch is opacity — no pricing page, no company details, no founding date anywhere we could find.

Pros

  • Voice conversation with dialect options rather than one generic accent
  • Daily article generated to your interest with comprehension questions
  • Corrections and vocabulary surfaced in context while you practise
  • Web, iOS and Android, plus school and enterprise plans and a documented API

Cons

  • No public pricing page — /en/pricing returns 404
  • No company name, country or founding year published on the site
  • Language count is stated as 18-plus but quality per language is not broken out

Speak

Speak is the app to pick if your problem is that you can read a language but freeze when you have to talk: every lesson pushes you to say full sentences and the tutor talks back. It is weaker on grammar explanation and reading, and the price is hidden until you are inside the trial. Six target languages for English speakers is a narrow menu next to Duolingo or Babbel.

Pros

  • Lessons are built around speaking aloud, with real-time pronunciation and phrasing feedback
  • Open-ended AI tutor roleplays (ordering, reservations) go beyond scripted drills
  • 7-day free trial before any charge
  • Built with OpenAI and backed by its startup fund, so model quality tracks the frontier

Cons

  • No prices on the website; they vary by region and promotion and appear only in-app
  • Six languages for English speakers, far fewer than mainstream rivals
  • Fees are non-refundable and cancellation needs three days' notice before renewal
  • The method depends on speaking to your phone, which is awkward in public

  • People preparing for travel or work conversations in Spanish, French, Korean, Japanese, Italian or Chinese
