What our research says

OpusClip

The default choice for turning a podcast or webinar into shorts, provided you accept that a human still has to reject a good share of the clips it picks. Pro now costs half as much on annual billing, which makes it the plan to compare against rivals; the free tier is for judging quality, not for publishing.

Pros

  • Reframing and animated captions are good enough to post without touch-up
  • Clip score gives a usable first-pass ordering of candidates
  • Free tier is a real plan, not a trial, so output quality is checkable first
  • Pro exports to Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve and costs $14.50 a month on annual billing

Cons

  • Free exports carry a watermark, allow no editing and stop being exportable after three days
  • Clip selection still needs manual review; the score is a hint, not a verdict
  • Starter is monthly-only, so the annual discount applies only from Pro up
  • Full API access and custom integrations sit behind quote-only Business; Pro gets limited API access

Submagic

The quickest route from a talking-head recording to captioned vertical clips, and the caption styling is what people actually pay for. If you already cut in Premiere or DaVinci, their built-in speech-to-text plus one saved template gets you most of the way for nothing.

Pros

  • caption presets track short-form trends rather than looking like generic subtitle burn-in
  • transcript-based trimming is far faster than scrubbing a timeline
  • every paid tier includes some API minutes, so the pipeline can be automated
  • 4K/60fps export at the top tier, which most caption tools cap below

Cons

  • quotas count finished videos (3 credits each), not minutes, so short clips waste allowance
  • clip-length ceilings of 2 minutes on Starter and 5 on Pro rule out most podcast episodes
  • Starter and Pro include only 10 API minutes a month; 100 needs the $69 Business tier
  • no free plan is listed on the pricing page, only a 'try for free' signup

Which one fits

Choose OpusClip if you need

  • Podcasters and streamers mining long episodes for social clips
  • Marketing teams repurposing webinars and conference talks into vertical video
  • Creators who want captions, reframing and scheduling in a single pass

Choose Submagic if you need

  • agencies and podcasters slicing one long recording into a week of shorts
  • creators who want caption styles that match what is currently working on short-form feeds
  • non-English content, since transcription covers a wide language set
