What our research says

OpusClip

The default choice for turning a podcast or webinar into shorts, provided you accept that a human still has to reject a good share of the clips it picks. Pro now costs half as much on annual billing, which makes it the plan to compare against rivals; the free tier is for judging quality, not for publishing.

Pros

  • Reframing and animated captions are good enough to post without touch-up
  • Clip score gives a usable first-pass ordering of candidates
  • Free tier is a real plan, not a trial, so output quality is checkable first
  • Pro exports to Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve and costs $14.50 a month on annual billing

Cons

  • Free exports carry a watermark, allow no editing and stop being exportable after three days
  • Clip selection still needs manual review; the score is a hint, not a verdict
  • Starter is monthly-only, so the annual discount applies only from Pro up
  • Full API access and custom integrations sit behind quote-only Business; Pro gets limited API access

Overlap

Overlap's pay-only-for-views-delivered model is the interesting part — a brand is not stuck paying for a month of clips nobody watched. That only works out well if the underlying clips are actually good, and there is no way to test quality without a sales conversation since there is no self-serve signup or published starting price.

Pros

  • Pays only for views a clip actually gets, not a flat seat fee
  • Publishes to nine platforms directly, not just export-and-post-yourself
  • Offers a CLI, API, and Node library for teams building their own pipeline

Cons

  • No self-serve pricing or signup — everything routes through a sales conversation
  • No published starting cost, so budgeting ahead of a call is guesswork
  • Outcome-based pricing means a viral month gets expensive fast
