What our research says

Modyak

Modyak solves a specific, real annoyance, wanting to use Claude Code's interface without being locked to Anthropic's models, with a lightweight menu-bar app instead of a config file you edit by hand. It's macOS-only and narrowly scoped to routing, so it won't help teams on other operating systems or those wanting a hosted gateway they don't have to run locally.

Pros

  • Free to use, with cost depending only on the provider chosen
  • One-click presets instead of manually editing routing config files
  • Supports a wide range of providers, including fully local, offline inference through Ollama
  • Translates streaming and tool/function calling between provider formats

Cons

  • macOS only, with no Windows or Linux version
  • No web interface, so it only helps with local, single-machine setups
  • As a small independent project, long-term maintenance and updates aren't guaranteed

OpenRouter

OpenRouter is the practical default for developers who want to try or mix many models without opening an account with every lab, and who value automatic fallback when a provider goes down. High-volume teams already on direct contracts with one or two labs will mostly be paying the platform fee for convenience they do not need.

Pros

  • 500+ models behind one OpenAI-compatible API
  • Automatic fallback across providers and routing by price or latency
  • Data-policy routing to keep prompts away from providers you do not trust
  • Free tier with 25+ free models for experimenting

Cons

  • Platform fee of 5.5 to 8% on top of model prices
  • Free tier is limited to 50 requests per day
  • Adds another party between your app and the model provider

Which one fits

Choose Modyak if you need

  • Developers who like the Claude Code interface but want a cheaper or local model
  • EU-based teams needing data residency that a US-hosted default provider doesn't guarantee
  • Anyone wanting a fully offline setup through Ollama

Choose OpenRouter if you need

  • Developers comparing or switching between many models from one codebase
  • Apps that need provider fallback for uptime
  • Small teams that want one bill instead of a dozen provider accounts
