Midjourney vs Stable Diffusion

Two fact sheets from our own research, side by side — pricing, platforms, API access and status re-checked by us rather than quoted from the vendors. Midjourney publishes a starting price ($8); Stable Diffusion does not. Only Stable Diffusion has a free tier. Only Stable Diffusion ships a public API.

What our research says

Midjourney

Midjourney still produces the most immediately attractive images of any generator, and it is still the least programmable. Buy it if you are art-directing by eye; look elsewhere if a machine has to call it.

Pros

  • Default aesthetic quality is still the reason people pay for it
  • Style and character references keep a look consistent across a set
  • Image-to-video arrived natively rather than through a bolted-on partner

Cons

  • No official public API, and unofficial wrappers breach the terms of service
  • GPU-hour metering makes cost per image hard to predict, and video burns roughly 26x a still
  • Images are public by default until you reach the $60 Pro tier
  • No free trial since 2023, so evaluation costs $10

Stable Diffusion

The reason a local generation ecosystem exists at all, and still the right answer when you need weights on your own hardware with no per-image meter. Just be clear about what you are adopting: the models are open, the licence is not unconditional, and Stability's own commercial attention has moved to a hosted brand-asset app that happily routes to competitors' models.

Pros

  • Weights genuinely run locally, so cost per image after hardware is electricity
  • The community licence explicitly permits derivative LoRAs and fine-tunes
  • An enormous body of community checkpoints, tooling and interfaces exists around these models
  • Hosted API pricing is per image and published, from $0.025 to $0.08 depending on model

Cons

  • The $1M revenue threshold turns a free licence into a quote-only negotiation with no public price
  • stability.ai/pricing no longer describes model access at all — it redirects to Brand Studio
  • Brand Studio credits do not roll over between months
  • Running locally means owning the GPU, the updates and the safety tooling yourself

Which one fits

Choose Midjourney if you need

  • Concept art, mood boards and editorial illustration where look beats control
  • Designers iterating visually rather than specifying precisely
  • Client work, provided you are on Pro or above for stealth mode

Choose Stable Diffusion if you need

  • Developers and studios that need generation on their own infrastructure with no per-call cost
  • Anyone fine-tuning or training LoRAs on a specific style, product or character
  • Privacy-sensitive or offline workloads where images cannot leave the building
