What our research says

Machato

A native alternative to keeping ChatGPT open in a browser tab, built and maintained by one developer over several years. Now that it is open source, the paid license mainly funds the developer and buys a pre-built binary rather than unlocking anything you could not compile yourself.

Pros

  • Works with multiple LLM providers from one native app, not just one vendor
  • Lifetime license rather than a recurring subscription
  • Now open source, so the code is auditable and can be self-built
  • Has sold over a thousand licenses, suggesting real ongoing use

Cons

  • One-person project with the continuity risk that implies
  • Distributed only through Gumroad, not the Mac App Store
  • Documentation and support are minimal compared to a funded commercial app

TypingMind

The right buy if you already pay for API credits and resent a second $20/month subscription per model vendor. Pointless if you only use one model casually, because the raw ChatGPT or Claude app is free and better integrated.

Pros

  • One-time personal licence instead of a recurring fee is genuinely rare in this category
  • Model coverage is broad, including self-hosted OpenAI-compatible endpoints
  • Teams edition covers SSO, RBAC and audit logs, which most BYOK front ends do not

Cons

  • You pay token costs on top of the licence, so heavy use is not cheaper than a flat subscription
  • Feature parity with vendor apps always lags after a model launch
  • Desktop presence is mostly a browser install rather than a full native app

Which one fits

Choose Machato if you need

  • macOS users who prefer a native chat client over a browser tab
  • People wanting one app to reach multiple LLM providers
  • Developers comfortable building from source if avoiding the license fee

Choose TypingMind if you need

  • Heavy users who want one window across OpenAI, Anthropic and Google keys
  • Teams that need shared prompts and preset keys without giving everyone a seat on each vendor
  • People who want chat history in their own browser or storage rather than a vendor account
