Overview

About Keep It Shot

Keep It Shot is a macOS app that fixes unreadable filenames. It reads images, PDFs, Word and Excel files and video, writes a descriptive name for each, and batch-renames a folder in a couple of clicks with an undo that restores the originals. It also builds a local search index so a screenshot can be found by what is in it. Naming rules are configurable and an auto-rename mode handles new files. Renaming is metered in credits: one per image or document, five per video, with 15 free each month. The privacy policy says images are sent to OpenAI's vision API to be described and are not retained by either party. No company name or country is published.

Editorial verdict

Pros & cons of Keep It Shot

medium confidence

Solves the specific misery of a Downloads folder full of Screenshot 2026-08-23 at 14.02.11, and does it for documents and video too rather than images alone. The local search index and the undo are what make it safe to run on a big folder. It is not offline despite the offline index: file contents go out to OpenAI's vision API to be described.

Pros

  • Renames images, PDFs, Office files and video, not just screenshots
  • Undo restores original filenames after a batch run
  • Local search index finds screenshots by content without uploading a library
  • A one-time 500-credit pack exists for people who will not subscribe

Cons

  • macOS only
  • Contents are sent to OpenAI's vision API, so it is not an offline pipeline despite the offline index
  • No company name, country or accountable entity beyond the product name
  • Video costs five credits each, so a video-heavy library burns a plan fast

Best for

  • Mac users with thousands of unnamed screenshots
  • designers and PMs archiving reference images
  • anyone who needs to find a screenshot by what is in it

Not for

  • Windows or Linux users
  • people who cannot send file contents to a third-party model API

Watch out: Renaming uploads file contents to a third-party model API; the vendor says nothing is stored, but the upload still happens.
