What our research says

Genie AI

One of the older names in AI contract work, with real investors behind it and a Word add-in that puts review where lawyers and founders actually redline. Pricing is per-user and steep for the tier: $75 a month buys one seat and insight across 50 documents. API and MCP access require the $600-plus Enterprise tier.

Pros

  • Word add-in as well as a browser app, so redlining happens in the working document
  • 500-plus template library alongside review and Q&A
  • Free tier lets you test creation and review before paying
  • Named UK company trading since 2017, backed by GV and Khosla Ventures
  • Enterprise tier covers 150+ jurisdictions with SSO, API and MCP

Cons

  • Pro is $75/month for a single seat
  • Free plan blocks exports entirely
  • API and MCP gated behind Enterprise at $600+/month
  • Token allowances, not document counts, govern how much you can actually run

Spellbook

Spellbook wins on the thing that decides legal-tech adoption: it lives in Word, where the lawyers already are, instead of asking them to move. The cost of that is a sales process and a price you cannot check before you engage.

Pros

  • Native Word add-in means near-zero behaviour change for the people who have to use it
  • Benchmarks against both market norms and the firm's own precedent, not just generic templates
  • Well capitalised: $50M Series B led by Khosla in October 2025 plus $40M debt in March 2026
  • 7-day free trial is available without going through procurement

Cons

  • No published pricing at any tier, so budgeting requires a sales conversation
  • No API, which blocks integration into an existing contract lifecycle system
  • Priced per seat, so cost scales with headcount rather than contract volume
  • The vendor is now actively acquiring competitors, so the product surface may shift

Which one fits

Choose Genie AI if you need

  • Founders and commercial teams signing contracts without in-house counsel
  • Sales and procurement staff who redline in Word
  • Companies that want templates plus review in the same tool

Choose Spellbook if you need

  • Small and mid-size firms and in-house teams doing high contract volume in Word
  • Practices with an existing precedent bank worth benchmarking drafts against
  • Teams that want redlining suggestions in the document rather than in a separate portal
