The app still loads and still takes payment, but the marketing site has not been republished since January 2024 and it is still selling GPT-3 as a headline feature - the team's attention clearly moved to their sister product CoLoop. Only worth a look if the GBP academic tier undercuts everything else for you; otherwise Elicit, SciSpace or NotebookLM are actively maintained and free to start.

Pros

  • Academic pricing starts well below most research assistants
  • Project structure with annotations and reference export is well suited to writing up
  • Cross-document question answering rather than one-PDF-at-a-time
  • Browser extension captures sources without leaving the page

Cons

  • Site content and copyright notice are years stale, and GPT-3 is still the advertised model
  • No free tier, only a trial that requires a card
  • No API and no mobile app
  • Priced in GBP, so USD buyers absorb the exchange rate

Scholarcy

The strongest option when you need a consistent structured breakdown of a specific paper you already have. It is a summariser, not a discovery engine, so it does not replace Elicit or Consensus for finding what to read.

Pros

  • Flashcard structure (claims, methods, limitations) is consistent enough to compare papers side by side
  • Citation links resolve to open-access copies, saving a separate hunt
  • Exports to Word, Excel and reference managers rather than trapping output in the app

Cons

  • Extraction quality drops on badly formatted or scanned PDFs
  • Free tier's roughly 10 summaries a month runs out within one review session
  • Site is behind aggressive bot protection, which makes automated or scripted use awkward
