Usage-based: pay as you go per second for compute metered in DBUs, billed monthly to a card, or committed-use contracts with discounts by contacting sales; a 14-day free trial and a no-cost Free Edition (smaller compute, fair-use limits, personal use only) exist. Per-DBU rates live in a price list that loads dynamically, so no entry figure could be read today.
Use tool ↗About Databricks
Databricks unifies data engineering, SQL warehousing and machine learning on a lakehouse built around Delta Lake and Unity Catalog, with notebooks, jobs and pipelines on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud. Its Mosaic AI layer covers fine-tuning, vector search, model serving and agent evaluation on the same governed data, and the company founded in 2013 by the creators of Apache Spark, Delta Lake and MLflow now serves more than 20,000 organisations from San Francisco. Billing is usage-based: compute is metered in Databricks Units at per-second granularity, paid as you go or under committed-use contracts, and a no-cost Free Edition with smaller compute lets students and hobbyists use the full platform for personal, non-commercial work.

Pros & cons of Databricks
Databricks is the platform to pick when your AI work starts from large, messy, governed data and your team already thinks in Spark, SQL and notebooks; the model training, serving and agent tooling sit on the same tables as the pipelines, which is the whole point. It is not a tool you try on a Saturday: pricing is in DBUs across three clouds, and a small team wanting a hosted model endpoint will find simpler and cheaper routes.
Pros
- One governed data layer (Unity Catalog) spans pipelines, warehousing, training and serving
- Runs on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, with the open Delta Lake format underneath
- Mosaic AI adds fine-tuning, vector search, model serving and agent evaluation without moving data
- Free Edition gives full-platform access for learning at no cost
- Per-second pay-as-you-go billing and a 14-day trial, no up-front commitment
Cons
- DBU-based pricing is hard to forecast and varies by cloud, region and workload type
- The platform assumes data-engineering skills; the learning curve is steep for application developers
- Free Edition is personal and non-commercial, with smaller compute and fair-use limits
- Real costs often come from the underlying cloud compute on top of the DBU charge
Best for
- Data platform teams consolidating ETL, warehousing and ML on one governed lakehouse
- Enterprises fine-tuning, serving and evaluating models against their own data at scale
- Students and hobbyists learning the stack on the Free Edition before a job requires it
Not for
- Small teams who just need an LLM API or a hosted vector database
- Anyone who needs a predictable monthly price up front
Watch out: The bill has two halves: Databricks charges per DBU and your cloud provider charges for the underlying VMs, so an idle cluster or an over-sized warehouse costs twice — set auto-termination before the first job.
