What our research says

Databricks

Databricks is the platform to pick when your AI work starts from large, messy, governed data and your team already thinks in Spark, SQL and notebooks; the model training, serving and agent tooling sit on the same tables as the pipelines, which is the whole point. It is not a tool you try on a Saturday: pricing is in DBUs across three clouds, and a small team wanting a hosted model endpoint will find simpler and cheaper routes.

Pros

  • One governed data layer (Unity Catalog) spans pipelines, warehousing, training and serving
  • Runs on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, with the open Delta Lake format underneath
  • Mosaic AI adds fine-tuning, vector search, model serving and agent evaluation without moving data
  • Free Edition gives full-platform access for learning at no cost
  • Per-second pay-as-you-go billing and a 14-day trial, no up-front commitment

Cons

  • DBU-based pricing is hard to forecast and varies by cloud, region and workload type
  • The platform assumes data-engineering skills; the learning curve is steep for application developers
  • Free Edition is personal and non-commercial, with smaller compute and fair-use limits
  • Real costs often come from the underlying cloud compute on top of the DBU charge

Deepnote

Deepnote suits analytics and data science teams that like the notebook workflow but want shared editing, scheduling and AI help without managing Jupyter servers. The free plan is generous enough for a small group to evaluate it on real projects. It is less convincing for people who only need a single dashboard, or who need on-premises hosting below the Enterprise tier.

Pros

  • Real-time editing, comments and revision history in one workspace
  • Python, SQL and R together, with native connections to common warehouses
  • Free plan includes unlimited basic compute and up to 5 projects
  • Scheduled notebooks and published data apps turn analysis into repeatable output

Cons

  • Free plan limits editors to 3 and AI agent use to a few calls a month
  • Per-editor pricing grows quickly for larger analytics groups
  • Heavy compute and extra AI use are billed on top of the bundled credits

Which one fits

Choose Databricks if you need

  • Data platform teams consolidating ETL, warehousing and ML on one governed lakehouse
  • Enterprises fine-tuning, serving and evaluating models against their own data at scale
  • Students and hobbyists learning the stack on the Free Edition before a job requires it

Choose Deepnote if you need

  • Data teams that want real-time collaboration on Python and SQL notebooks
  • Analysts who publish results as data apps and scheduled reports
  • Developers who prefer to work locally in an editor and scale up in the cloud
