What our research says

Character.AI

Still the deepest character library anywhere and the reason the whole companion category exists, but it has been rebuilt around safety and identity checks, and the audience it was famous for is now locked out.

Pros

  • Character library is far larger than any competitor's, with voice calls and group scenes included
  • Free tier is genuinely usable, with the subscription mostly buying speed and memory
  • Safety changes are unusually explicit about what was removed and when

Cons

  • Age assurance defaults to face-based estimation, which is a hard stop for privacy-minded users
  • Charms are a second currency on top of c.ai+, so the $9.99 is a floor not a ceiling
  • No API, no export, and no self-hosting
  • The platform has been reshaped by wrongful-death litigation, and further restrictions are plausible

Sanjaya chatbot

A themed conversational character rather than a general assistant — useful if you specifically want to explore the Mahabharata through dialogue, less useful for anything else. It's one of over a hundred characters on the same underlying platform, so the experience depends heavily on that platform's chat engine rather than anything unique to this character.

Pros

  • free to start chatting with no signup barrier described
  • keeps long-term memory across a conversation per the platform's own claims
  • themed specifically around a well-known epic rather than a generic persona

Cons

  • the character's own page renders almost no static content, making it hard to verify claims independently
  • quality depends on the shared MessengerX chat engine, not anything specific to this character
  • no dedicated pricing or terms page for this character alone

  • users already on the MessengerX platform exploring its character roster
