What our research says

Character.AI

Still the deepest character library anywhere and the reason the whole companion category exists, but it has been rebuilt around safety and identity checks, and the audience it was famous for is now locked out.

Pros

  • Character library is far larger than any competitor's, with voice calls and group scenes included
  • Free tier is genuinely usable, with the subscription mostly buying speed and memory
  • Safety changes are unusually explicit about what was removed and when

Cons

  • Age assurance defaults to face-based estimation, which is a hard stop for privacy-minded users
  • Charms are a second currency on top of c.ai+, so the $9.99 is a floor not a ceiling
  • No API, no export, and no self-hosting
  • The platform has been reshaped by wrongful-death litigation, and further restrictions are plausible

CyberStory

CyberStory leans harder into the game-like side of AI fiction than a plain story generator: choices branch across a whole run, scenes get turned into short video clips, and readers can appear in the story via an uploaded selfie. The credit system covers narrative, art, and narration together, so a heavily-illustrated playthrough burns through credits faster than text alone.

Pros

  • No account needed to try the opening chapters of a story
  • Credits cover narrative, AI art, and narration together in one system
  • Users can publish their own stories and earn from them

Cons

  • Credit consumption scales with how much art or narration a playthrough uses, making total cost hard to predict upfront
  • Subscription tiers jump sharply between levels ($9.99 to $49.99 to $99.99)
  • No company location or founder bio beyond the LLC registration
