What our research says

Character.AI

Still the deepest character library anywhere and the reason the whole companion category exists, but it has been rebuilt around safety and identity checks, and the audience it was famous for is now locked out.

Pros

  • Character library is far larger than any competitor's, with voice calls and group scenes included
  • Free tier is genuinely usable, with the subscription mostly buying speed and memory
  • Safety changes are unusually explicit about what was removed and when

Cons

  • Age assurance defaults to face-based estimation, which is a hard stop for privacy-minded users
  • Charms are a second currency on top of c.ai+, so the $9.99 is a floor not a ceiling
  • No API, no export, and no self-hosting
  • The platform has been reshaped by wrongful-death litigation, and further restrictions are plausible

Creation OS

Creation OS goes further than a one-off AI story generator by trying to hold state - debts, relationships, past choices - across an ongoing campaign, which is the harder problem most AI-RPG tools skip. It's a very new product from a small operation, so the depth of that persistence claim, including one world reportedly reaching turn 5,011, is still largely unverified beyond the vendor's own marketing.

Pros

  • Persistent world state (inventory, debts, relationships) across sessions, not just a single chat thread
  • Free-forever tier with real starter credits, not just a time-limited trial
  • Supports both solo play and asynchronous shared worlds for up to six players

Cons

  • Very new company (established 2026) with an unproven track record
  • Credit-based system means long campaigns will need the paid tier or top-ups
  • Web-only, with no mobile or offline access

Which one fits

Choose Character.AI if you need

  • Adults who want long-running roleplay with persistent personas
  • People building and sharing characters for an existing community
  • Casual conversational entertainment rather than task work

Choose Creation OS if you need

  • Tabletop RPG fans wanting a persistent solo or small-group campaign between sessions
  • Players who want NPCs and consequences to carry over rather than resetting each session
