What our research says

Character.AI

Still the deepest character library anywhere and the reason the whole companion category exists, but it has been rebuilt around safety and identity checks, and the audience it was famous for is now locked out.

Pros

  • Character library is far larger than any competitor's, with voice calls and group scenes included
  • Free tier is genuinely usable, with the subscription mostly buying speed and memory
  • Safety changes are unusually explicit about what was removed and when

Cons

  • Age assurance defaults to face-based estimation, which is a hard stop for privacy-minded users
  • Charms are a second currency on top of c.ai+, so the $9.99 is a floor not a ceiling
  • No API, no export, and no self-hosting
  • The platform has been reshaped by wrongful-death litigation, and further restrictions are plausible

GOODY-2

GOODY-2 makes an argument by taking a real tendency to its limit: refuse enough things for defensible-sounding reasons and you end up with something useless. As satire it lands, and it has stayed online long past most viral projects. As a tool it does nothing, and it is the only chatbot in this catalogue that answers no question at all, on purpose.

Pros

  • Free, no signup, and still online two years after launch
  • The refusal reasoning is genuinely well written and never breaks character
  • Makes its point about safety tuning more clearly than most essays do
  • The creator is openly named: BRAIN, an art studio in Los Angeles

Cons

  • It does nothing useful, and that is the entire design
  • The corporate framing, client logos and benchmark are fabricated and read as real at a glance
  • No API, no roadmap and no support, because it is an art piece

  • People building and sharing characters for an existing community
  • Casual conversational entertainment rather than task work

Choose GOODY-2 if you need

  • Making a point about over-refusal in a talk or a class
  • A few minutes of entertainment
  • Anyone studying how alignment trade-offs get argued about
