Overview

About AutoDraw

AutoDraw is a browser canvas from Google Creative Lab that reads your strokes as you draw and offers matching illustrations made by professional artists. Picking a suggestion replaces the sketch with the finished drawing, which you can then recolor, arrange with shapes and text, and download as PNG. It runs with no account and no usage meter, and the suggestion library is fixed rather than generative.

Editorial verdict

Pros & cons of AutoDraw

high confidence

A nine-year-old Google toy that still works and still costs nothing, useful for a quick icon or a whiteboard doodle. It is not an image generator, so anyone expecting prompt-to-art should look elsewhere.

Pros

  • Zero friction: no login, no email, works on phone browsers
  • Suggestions are real artist drawings, so output looks consistent rather than mangled
  • Free forever with no watermark on the PNG download

Cons

  • Matches only against a limited catalogue of common objects; anything specific fails
  • PNG only, no SVG or layered file
  • Untouched for years; the surrounding editor is very basic

Best for

  • Teachers and kids making quick classroom visuals
  • Slide and worksheet doodles that need to look tidy
  • Anyone who wants a clean icon in under a minute without an account

Not for

  • Producing original artwork or brand assets
  • Anything needing vector export, layers or high-resolution output
  • Subjects outside its fixed library of everyday objects

Watch out: There is no save or account, so closing the tab loses the drawing unless you download it first.
